What is 3D printing?

And why it useful for plant phenotyping

Over the last few years 3D printing technologies have become very accesible worldwide. 3D printers are used to "print" physical objects from computer model designs. Models printed can range from very simple to complex designs and can be printed in a variety of materials such as PLA, ABS plastic, nylon, wood filament, metal filament, carbon fibre etc. The advantage of 3D printing is that unique and custom designed objects can be rapidly prototyped and utilized around the world. Even without a 3D printer these model files (normally .STL) can be printed at community makerspaces or on commercial print-service websites. In recent years 3D printing has been used to share custom plant phenotyping tools, plant growth systems and outreach models that are being printed and used around the world.
