Pollen from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua, Asteraceae).
Artemisinin, a chemical extracted from Artemisia annua leaves, is the basis for the worldwide standard treatment for malaria. The Chinese scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize for her work in developing it from traditional Chinese medicine.
Artemisia pollen is one of the most common causes of hayfever in North America, and central Europe’s main airborne carrier for a bacterial toxin which can exacerbate conditons like asthma.
Technical description of Artemisia pollen, from Paldat (Halbritter & Sam, 2016): small isopolar monads, spheroidal or prolate, circular or lobate in polar view, tricolporate, with microechinate/granulate exine.
